Training a dog has a world of benefits. Your dog will be a better dog and you will be a better dog owner. The tips below can help you train your dog correctly. It can be a bonding opportunity instead of a time of struggle.

Exercise your dog for at least an hour each day in addition to regular outside potty breaks and training sessions. If they are well-exercised, then you will have more efficient training. Dogs that exercise are happier and more responsive.

Approach any unfamiliar dog with care. Walk slowly toward him and allow the dog to sniff your hand before trying to pet the dog. This will give the dog time learn your scent and possibly trust you. After the dog becomes familiar with your smell, he’ll start to trust you and listen to you.

Patience is of utmost importance when training a dog. Each dog has their own style of learning. Some dogs take to training easily and can learn new commands in minutes, while others will need plenty of time and repetition. Patience will help your dog feel comfortable when training with you.

Realize an older dog’s limitations. Older dogs won’t be trained perfectly. They’ll always have some quirks that need to be embraced. Understand that if your dog is older, he or she is going to have things already set into their minds that is going to be virtually impossible to remove. Although you may be able to teach an older dog new habits, there may be some habits that cannot be changed.

Make sure your dog gets checked out regularly. Check your dog’s health if you notice him having a hard time with training. Many times a dog can be in pain without you knowing it. Many times the only sign that a health problem exists are behavioral changes. Common changes include losing control of their bladder and a sudden onset of aggressive behavior.

Provide your dog with ample toys and food to prevent him from rummaging in the trash. Make sure your trash gets emptied regularly, and never put something irresistible in there, like bones. If your dog continues to dig in the trash, then crate them when you can’t supervise them.

Train your dog throughout its life to keep their mind active. Some people believe that all a dog needs is an obedience class to be fully trained. You could not be more wrong. Your dog is going to keep on learning from you all through its life. If you spend time training your dog when they are young, you will have a family member for all of their life.

Spend just the right amount of time training your dog, and do not wear it out. Start out training for just a few minutes each day and work up to half an hour or so over time. Notice when your dog begins getting distracted during a training session.

Is your dog pulling on the leash? You aren’t alone in this, but it is easy to fix! A harness can make walking your dog a more enjoyable experience. It can also reduce the amount of pulling your dog does.

Use a bell to train your dog on how to alert you of when they need to use the bathroom. To begin the training, you’ll ring the bells and take them outside, but before long they will take over. Dogs aren’t stupid; they will quickly pick up on using the bell themselves.

As previously written, dog training has a lot of benefits. Use what you have read here and you will find yourself the proud owner of man’s best friend. You will both have fun and learn to work as a team.
